Overcoming Fear Is Critical To Self Defense

Imagine that you are walking through a dark alley late at night and you are approached by an angry man. He demands your money and your ring and says he will hurt you unless you consent to his demands. If you are like most Americans, it is likely that the primary emotion which this summons is fear. And as you probably know, it is difficult to operate when in a state of fear. The likely outcome to this scenario is not pleasant — you could give up your possessions and hope that the man leaves you alone, but it is quite possible that upon giving up the items, the man would proceed to make even worse demands. As such, you would be much better off if you had a basic understanding of self defense. Even having a minimal understanding of self defense techniques could eliminate some of your fear and allow you to come out of this situation with not only your possessions, but your safety and well-being as well.

By studying martial arts and self defense, you are much better equipped to protect your safety. But it is not necessarily the physical techniques that make you more able to handle yourself, rather, it is the learned ability to overcome your fears. In other words, it is a proven fact that those who can cope with their fear are better able to deal with situations that generally cause people to cave under pressure.

Self defense training can help you overcome your fears in a number of ways. The best way in which training can help you is by boosting your confidence. Most people are not aware of what they are capable of in regards to self defense until they undergo some sort of training. Once they begin training, however, they see that they are quite capable of protecting themselves. Developing this sense of confidence goes a long way towards eliminating fear from situations where they must put their training into practice.

Training in the martial arts also provides individuals with an opportunity to deal with discomfort. As they experience the discomfort that comes with pushing themselves, they learn that they can deal with pain. Having this understanding teaches individuals that their bodies are capable of more than they might have previously believed. With this knowledge, much of the fear surrounding what others might be able to inflict on them diminishes. In other words, training teaches people to take a punch– giving them the courage to stand up for themselves should the need arise.

Finally, self defense training teaches people to focus on their survival. Although this may sound elementary, it is all too common for people to give in to whatever demands an attacker might make on them. By learning to fight for survival, individuals learn that they must do whatever is necessary to set aside their fears and protect themselves.

Overcoming fear is a huge part of self defense, but it cannot be done without proper training. As such, you have every reason in the world to undergo some training in the martial arts.
