If Not Now, Then When?

by Robert Pardon
I remember during my days as a practicing alcoholic how I always wanted to put off what I knew I had to do. Every person of addiction knows they are wrong. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that alcohol and drugs are destroying everything around them, but try as we might we can’t quite get ourselves to make a commitment to stop. We know why we drink and use and we are convinced we can’t live without it.

The reality is if we don’t stop life becomes less and less enjoyable. We work to drink and use and drinking and using is work. It takes everything out of us and yet you would think it was our friend instead of the enemy we know deep down inside that it is.

The question then becomes are you an alcoholic or drug addict? If you know that you are or at least you are losing the ability to control your drinking or using then why not do something about it now? Why wait until the wife or husband leaves? Why wait until someone comes and takes the kids away or you lose another job or something or someone near and dear to you?

If you don’t do something now, then when? What is it going to take for you? What are you going to have to lose before you get it? I hope you don’t have to suffer as I suffered before I finally understood- if not now, then when. Alcoholism and drug addiction is a terrible thing.

I have met many people who suffered far greater than I and they are now recovered. Just like me they woke up one day and said “when” is now and they never looked back. Won’t you join us?

All it takes is being sick and tired of being sick and tired and finding something or someone who can help you. It really doesn’t matter so much what you choose to believe in as your means of help, as much as it matters that you believe. The “Big Book” of Alcoholics Anonymous does say that it ought to make sense.
Let’s just make this year your year to stop the madness, get off the merry-go-round of addiction and on the road to recovery.
