Personal Development Lies.

Tuesday 20 November 2007 @ 5:11 pm

by Craig Harper
Have you ever bought something only to discover down the track that you didn’t actually get what you thought you were buying… that you’ve been well and truly scammed?
Of course you have.
Me too.
We all have.

“But with these pills I’m meant to lose 14 pounds in 14 days… without getting off the couch!!”

“Hey, isn’t this phone supposed to do neck massage, make a cappuccino… and land the Space Shuttle?”

The advertising and the hype just didn’t match the product.
Companies constantly over-promise and under-deliver… it’s an age-old trick called ’selling stuff’!
“Oh… you want a steering wheel with that car Mr Harper… well, that’s an option”

Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story!

Well, this happens in the world of Personal Development too.
Shock, horror.
I know it’s hard to believe that someone might actually care more about telling you what you want to hear, or making money than helping you… but try and get your head around it.
Crazy concept I know.
Am I doing the sarcasm thing again?
Sorry.

Sure, there are some amazing, genuine people out there who are doing their best to ‘be the change’… and then there are those who are peddling lies or at the very least, half truths.

Too many ‘wanna-be experts’ espouse messages that are misleading, unrealistic, impractical and potentially dangerous. Good for selling books, not so good for creating real-life results… forever change.
In a culture which is desperate for a shortcut (we are the quick-fix generation) it’s easy to sell lies because so many of us don’t wanna buy the truth… it’s not nearly as attractive. We spend millions every day on weight-loss products because we get sucked in by terms like ‘quick, easy, fast and painless’… and we continue to get fatter… because all that crap doesn’t work!!

“Yep, I’m gonna get me some o’ those seven minute abs!!”

Good luck with that.

It’s true, we are an incredibly gullible society, desperate to find an easy way rather than discovering the most effective way.
We don’t need more ’success’ theories or shortcuts, we need practical, proven, common sense, results-based strategies.
More reality, less fluff.
More honesty, less razzle-dazzle.

For how much longer will we continue to complicate the simple?
Re-invent the Self Help wheel?
Go around in ever-expanding Personal Development circles?
How many different ways can we say the same thing?
If we were to believe some people, it’s a wonder that any of us achieved anything before they arrived on the Personal Development landscape with their new ’success’ systems and programs.

Lucky us.

Call me crazy, call me old-fashioned… but I (stupidly) still embrace some of those wacky archaic notions like self-control, discipline, planning, determination, focus, passion, commitment and hard work.
I know, I’m out of date.
So out of touch.
Hard work… there’s a term you won’t see in any advertising literature… can’t sell that!

The reality is that creating our best life and fulfilling our potential will always involve a level of pain, discomfort, blood, sweat, tears and commitment. But try and find those facts on the front of a Self-Help book or in the advertising for any Personal Development program.

I won’t get too specific about books, programs or individuals (I have an aversion to litigation) but let’s just say that you would be well advised to question, explore and consider for yourselves before you buy into someone else’s (version of) reality, success or change.

I always tell my audiences “don’t believe me… simply listen, consider what I say and then judge for yourself. See if something that I say resonates within you.” You need to find your own truth among the ever-increasing mountain of Personal Development information.

Is it possible to create amazing, mind-blowing outcomes in our life?
Absolutely.
Is it quick, easy, simple and painless?
Typically not.
Is it worth making the effort?
Absolutely.

I’m at the front of the queue when it comes to encouraging people to create their own amazing life… relationships, health, career, finances, happiness, fun. And while I believe that most of us are exploding with talent and potential and can do and achieve amazing things, I am also passionate about teaching people the realistic, no-frills, this-is-what-really-works approach to creating their best life.

I care about what happens when the ‘Guru’ leaves town, the hype and the ‘motivation’ have died down, you’re not ‘in state’, you’re not ‘in the zone’, your back is a bit sore, the kids are screaming, the bills are mounting and the emotional impact of the workshop, the book, the seminar, the DVD or the CD has long gone. Creating forever change ain’t about moments of motivation and inspiration… and it ain’t about books, programs or even this article; it’s about what you do over the course of a lifetime!!!

A few of my favourite(?) lies:

The lie: You deserve it.
The truth: You earn it, you create it, you work for it.

The lie: If you can conceive it, you can achieve it.
The truth: Not always. I can picture myself running a hundred metres in nine seconds all I want… but it ain’t gonna happen. I can picture myself being a rock star in front of 50,000 screaming fans… but sadly, no chance - it also takes some talent. It’s great to visualise and create a mental picture, it’s also wise to be practical and realistic.

The lie: Motivation will get you there.
The truth: It won’t, motivation comes and goes. It’s about commitment - that’s what keeps us going when the motivation is absent. It’s about being totally emotionally invested into that endeavour so that even when you don’t ‘feel like it’, you’re still doing what you need to do to create your desired outcomes. When most people have thrown in the towel, you persevere.

The lie: If it’s meant to be, the Universe will deliver it to you.
The truth: That’s crap. The Universe doesn’t give a shit about you.
As I’ve said before, the traditional concept of destiny is the refuge of the weak. It’s for lazy, fearful people who don’t wanna get off their ass and take charge of their own life. Some people would have you believe that your future is some pre-determined event that you happen to be an unwilling participant in. Enjoy that reality… the rest of us will be over here creating our own amazing future.

The lie: This book, program, CD, DVD, website… will change your life.
The truth: You will change your life.

7-Day Program to Unlocking Self Improvement Power (part 1)

Monday 19 November 2007 @ 10:11 am

by zhafran
When we look at a certain object, a painting for example — we won’t be able to appreciate what’s in it, what is painted and what else goes with it if the painting is just an inch away from our face. We reach a point in our life when we are ready for change and a whole bunch of information that will help us unlock our self-improvement power. The only time we think of unlocking our self-improvement power is when everything got worst.

We learn our lessons when we experience pain. We finally see the warning signs and signals when things get rough and tough. When do we realize that we need to change diets? When none of our jeans and shirts would fit us. When do we stop eating candies and chocolates? When all of our teeth has fallen off. When do we realize that we need to stop smoking? When our lungs have gone bad. When do we pray and ask for help? When we realize that we’re gonna die tomorrow.

The only time most of us ever learn about unlocking our self-improvement power is when the whole world is crashing and falling apart. We think and feel this way because it is not easy to change. But change becomes more painful when we ignore it.

Change will happen, like it or hate it. At one point or another, we are all going to experience different turning points in our life — and we are all going to eventually unlock our self-improvement power not because the world says so, not because our friends are nagging us, but because we realized its for our own good.

Now, you don’t have to feel a tremendous heat before realizing the need for self-improvement. Unlocking your self-improvement power means unlocking yourself up in the cage of thought that “its just the way I am”. It is such a poor excuse for people who fear and resist change. Most of us program our minds like computers.

Self-improvement may not be everybody’s favorite word, but if we look at things in a different point of view, we might have greater chances of enjoying the whole process instead of counting the days until we are fully improved. Three sessions in a week at the gym would result to a healthier life, reading books instead of looking at porns will shape up a more profound knowledge, going out with friends and peers will help you take a step back from work and unwind. And just when you are enjoying the whole process of unlocking your self-improvement power, you’ll realize that you’re beginning to take things light and become happy.

The Anatomy of a Holiday Binge

Monday 19 November 2007 @ 8:11 am

by Eli Davidson
As a motivational speaker I was always dieting, I never believed I was eating lean enough. Lettuce, celery, and apples were the only foods I ate without a pang of guilt. Since I could never stay on that diet very long, custom-designed for a gerbil, I binged in frustration. In college, my car was littered with telltale wrappers from the Twinkies and Milky Ways I ate when no one was watching. A day was judged good or bad according to how I managed my war with food. Had I prevailed and eaten just fruit and salad? Or had I been ambushed by the enemy, chocolate? Yet, I never felt thin enough. Even when I finally achieved my elusive ideal weight of 110 pounds, I still saw my fat instead of my leanness.

Quiz:
Are You On The Perfect Diet . . . for a Gerbil?
Do you rate your day by how well you waged your war with food?
Do you sneak food?
Find out if you are in the Cycle of Overeating

The Cycle of Overeating
Self-nagging is one of the most fattening things on the planet. It’s what drives the cycle of overeating. Debra Waterhouse, R.N., reports that according to a Stanford University study, weight loss doesn’t necessarily improve body image. Rather, the reverse is true: body acceptance—a low-criticism diet—is the best weight-loss program. The women who were the most at peace with their body were twice as likely to lose weight than those who were wildly dissatisfied with the way they looked. That’s why beating yourself up after eating some chocolate cake often leads to eating the entire cake.

Here’s how this works:

ANATOMY OF A BINGE
Step One: The Impossible Dream Syndrome. Glancing through the most recent copy of your favorite magazine, you take a good look at Madonna’s arms. You think your arms should look like that, forgetting about the army of workout trainers, Pilate’s teachers, and yoga instructors she has to help with those triceps. Those “shoulds” are a slippery bunch. Before you’ve had time to mull it over, they’ve got you comparing yourself to a picture in a magazine and coming out on the losing end. Then you assign yourself a Completely Impossible Task: “I will look like Madonna if it kills me. From now on I will never eat dessert.”

This leads to Step Two: The Wrong, Wrong, Wrong Syndrome. When you decree an unrealistic expectation for yourself, you are setting yourself up to fail. If you are a human being, at some point you will probably eat a piece of cake. Sure enough, at some point you yield to that slice of orange pecan torte with lemon frosting smiling at you from the dessert tray.

Breaking your promise to yourself sends you right into Step Three: The Scolding Syndrome: “You are such a fat slob. You ate cake again. What a disgusting loser.”

To lessen the pain of flogging yourself emotionally, you go into Step Four: The Oh, Screw It Syndrome. “Why bother. I blew my diet already. I think I will eat the entire tray of desserts.” Afterward, when you see the wreckage of a room strewn with crumbs, you get so disgusted that you declare you will never touch a morsel of dessert again; you’re going for Madonna arms—and the cycle begins anew.

The Speed of Focus in Business

Saturday 17 November 2007 @ 11:11 am

by Roice Krueger
I’ve worked with Toyota and helped with consulting and moving their factories. They work at an unbelievable speed because they are totally focused on one thing, which is the principle of kaizen: constant, never-ending improvement all the time every day.

In other companies an employee has an idea and they send it through committee, and then six months later it might get applied on the line.

Not at Toyota.

They’re all focused on the same thing.

As soon as an employee gets a new idea about improving a process, they take it to “the constant, never-ending improvement department” in the center of the plant. The employee says, “If I had a wrench that was shaped like this, I could get a little bit more leverage. I could save 2/10 of a second on every bolt I tighten. That would be really cool.”

The improvement department has no other job other than to actually manufacture and create what employees are proposing. So that new wrench will be helping move the line tomorrow.

Notice what this does to the organization.

Now the Toyota plants in the U.S. are getting thousands of suggestions from employees. Why? Because thousands of suggestions have already been implemented, and people have become focused on improvement.

They want to top themselves.

The thing that is so powerful is not simply that they are getting lots of suggestions, because many organizations get lots of suggestions. The thing that is so powerful about Toyota is that every suggestion relates to the company’s focus.

It gives self-esteem to the individual, who says, “My idea just got accepted! I can go home and tell my family I did something important this day, this year, this lifetime,” and they are going to want to do more.

That is called working on WOW.

It’s working on making the best automobiles on the planet so when the vehicles come off the assembly line, every employee knows that the WOW result is something they contributed to.

Toyota is the most profitable company in Japan and has been for years.

On this level, what we have to do is look at the 80/20 rule and rethink what it is. Is it really 80/20? Or is it 1/99?

What is the one vital thing that will maximize your results if you get it done with quality, consistency and speed?

Focus on WOW!

Saturday 17 November 2007 @ 3:11 am

by Roice Krueger
In the speaking industry we have only one person who is a billionaire, Dr. Nido Qubein.

He came to America with no money. His focus was to learn English. He carried around little 3 x 5 cards and learned ten words every day until he mastered English. His English, I suggest, is better than that of almost anybody you know.

Nido Qubein attended High Point University in North Carolina and then started learning the business of business. He is now the President of High Point University. He is on the Executive Committee of Great Harvest Bread Company and serves on the Board of the 9th largest financial institution in the U. S.

When the president of High Point University died, Nido was unanimously voted president. He didn’t really want the job. He went to his wife, who said it was okay. He went to his clients and said, “I still have to talk 100 times a year in one of my other businesses.” They all said that was fine. Nido has raised over $100 million and is making High Point University the Harvard of the South. To do that, he decided to have a focus different from anyone else. He asked, “What are the ‘non-WOW’ factors in my university?” He pays one guy $100,000 a year to find out what a “non-WOW” is and pays another guy to tell him what a “WOW” is.

That means each of these guys has focus!

One of the WOWs is that when the parents visit the campus with their daughters, Nido says, “Every night after dark we drive your daughter home. So she is safer here at High Point than anywhere else.”

That’s a WOW!

“Every hot day we give free ice cream.” It costs $4 for each ice cream bar.

That’s a WOW!

Nido has 101 WOWs, which have completely transformed the university experience for his students.

I love this concept, because every person working in a business needs to be focused on a WOW over the course of the year.

You Cant Do Ten Things a Day and Really Get Anything Valuable Done!

Friday 16 November 2007 @ 4:11 pm

by Roice Krueger
If I ask you what you did this year and you say, “Let’s see: I did ten tasks, every day for 200 working days, so I did 2,000 things,” then you’re completely worthless in adding value to the business. I can guarantee that anything you are doing ten of in a day is not going to be a WOW.

Check in with yourself and ask, “Is the project that I am now working on in my business going to be a WOW? At the end of the year when I get asked what I did this year and I say “I did X,” is everyone going to say “Wow!”? Are our customers going to buy a WOW? And are they going to talk about my WOW in somebody’s video?”

I was teaching a time management workshop in Bangkok, Thailand, and I was explaining that you have to be able to say yes to the most important projects and no to the unimportant.

I had a plant manager, a German gentleman in the class, and he came up to me and said, “What you are teaching is very true.”

I asked, “What do you mean?” He said, “You know, at the beginning of each year, I pick one or two things that are really important I need to do. Each month I pick one or two things to help get those done. Each week I pick one or two things. You know what I have been able to do? I only work 20 hours a week now, sometimes 15, because I get all of the work done. We have an award-winning manufacturing plant and we meet all of our goals and all of our quality standards. Also, I am getting promoted.”

So many people are so caught up, busy, tired, and working long hours. They are trying to do everything. They are not focused on the vital.

So let’s emphasize this again. Busy-ness is not business.

Motivation Is Yours With Weight Loss Hypnotherapy CDs

Friday 16 November 2007 @ 3:11 pm

by Alan B. Densky, CH
With chilly, winter days ahead for a lot of us, the thought of braving the weather to get to the gym or go for a jog does not sound very engaging. Finding the motivation to adhere to your weight loss goals when everyone else wants to hibernate is painless with hypnosis for weight loss.

Many us who are trying to get back into shape agree that motivation is especially challenging when the weather changes, so what if you could stay committed to your diet and exercise plan simply by watching a self hypnosis weight loss DVD or listening to a CD? Even better, a self hypnosis weight loss program can diminish your cravings too.

Hypnotherapy for weight loss works simply, but effectively, by directing you to a deeply relaxed state where your unconscious mind can more readily accept suggestions, such as the ones that will keep you motivated to stay on your fitness track, even in the middle of winter.

It is a fact that if a person exercises, it will speed up his/her metabolism and speed up the rate that weight is dropped. Some of the most successful hypnosis exercise motivation techniques comes from Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP. With NLP, the unconscious mind is programmed to use the very same thought processes that are initiating a problem, to do away with it. Said another way, the same thought processes that the unconscious mind utilizes to create cravings and oral compulsions could help to completely remove them! And similarly, the same processes can be used to increase your motivation to exercise.

Anchoring is an NLP technique that can be practiced to give you a “switch” for prompting feelings and behaviors. Creating a weight loss hypnosis anchor works simply and effectively like this: A qualified hypnotherapy weight loss professional will safely guide you into a tranquil hypnotic state. Then the hypnotherapist will ask you to identify a time when you were excited and happy about anything in your life.

The point of this exercise is to remember and re-experience as many sensations as you can from various times in your life when you felt motivated and eager to do anything you wanted to. Then, the hypnotherapist will ask you to anchor those feelings by simply touching two fingers together.

Next, you will be asked to use your imagination to see yourself exercising and enjoying it. As you make this mental image, you will trigger your anchor by touching those two fingers together again. When you complete this action, your unconscious mind will connect the feeling of excitement and eagerness from the other memory to the thought of exercising.

From that point on, any time you need to feel motivated to exercise, you can simply trigger your anchor and re-experience those same encouraging feelings that will motivate you to workout. NLP and weight loss hypnosis can even be helpful to dissuade behaviors, so you can easily beat cravings. That sounds much easier and encouraging than beating yourself up for missing a workout or giving into temptation, doesn’t it?

A successful weight loss hypnosis program will also deal with the root cause of weight gain for many people, namely a lack of self-esteem. In a relaxed state, you can be given post-hypnotic suggestions that will develop your self-esteem as you lose each pound. The lack of self-esteem is a big reason for being overweight.

A lot of people wonder if, after attempting every new diet and buying every piece of exercise equipment on the market, something as straight forward as weight loss hypnosis can help them. The good news is that research shows that all normal people are hypnotizable to a greater or lesser extent. However, it is important to note that people who have less than a 70 I.Q. or those who are in an active state of psychosis or with senility generally are not hypnotizable.

But for the rest of us, self hypnosis for weight loss can actually make us look forward to exercising and eating healthily. That said, the main proponent for success in any fitness routine, whether it embraces weight loss hypnosis or not, is wanting to reach your weight loss goals.

On a related note, that is precisely why you can’t force someone to undergo weight loss self hypnosis simply by giving them suggestions. If someone is against an idea, no amount of weight loss hypnosis they hear or see will take hold. Referring to the NLP explanation above, if someone does not have a memory of feeling positive or motivated, they can still be successful with NLP and hypnotherapy because they can envision what it would feel like if they felt that way, and anchor the imagined feelings.

So, if you are like many of us and find your drive dwindling as the temperatures drop and the days get darker, weight loss hypnosis can assist you to regain (or maintain) your enthusiasm for carrying out and finally hitting your fitness goals.

Alan B. Densky, CH is a leader in the use of Video hypnosis for weight loss. His Neuro-VISION technology was awarded a US Patent thanks to its effectiveness. He offers numerous powerful hypnosis weight loss programs. Visit for free self hypnosis resources & downloads.

Action

Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Finding the courage to dream is like deciding to go to an exotic destination. Now that you know where you are going, it’s time to choose the path. It is overwhelming to stand at the junction of life, when you know where you want to be, but still not sure which one of the endless options to choose. It’s scary, but exciting.

For some people, the dream has created the path by itself and the journey has already begun. For these people, dreaming alone has already energized them. They are more focused and empowered to go forward towards the future. They’ve entered the magic zone, where things just happen “by themselves”.

At our house, about a year ago, Gal worked very hard on setting a goal regarding the activities with the kids. It was very hard to set a goal that involved others. After 4 days, he eventually wrote “It is 4pm on Wednesday. We are in the kitchen with the kids, preparing afternoon tea together”. That same day, he went to pick up the girls from school and kindy. Eden, our 15 year-old daughter, stood at the entrance to the dining area and declared “Today, I’m in the mood for making muffins”. Not long after, we saw a beautiful sight - Eden and Noff, our 3 year-old daughter, giggling and dipping their fingers in muffin mixture. Gal hadn’t talk to either of them about it and I’d had no chance to say anything before they came in. This was the first in a series of “spookables” and we now live happily in the magic zone.

Indeed, it starts looking like the universe conspires for the success of those who dream.

For others, making the wish list has been frustrating. The scary unknown was stronger than the vision of the dream. Yes, it was very nice playing fairy tales and magic, but how do I get there?

This always brings me to one of my favorite books, “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. We climb high mountains and cross deserts in search of things that are in our back yard all the time.

The first step to getting your goal is to start moving. “Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there”, said Will Rogers. You see, in the fast-paced world of expanding knowledge and amazing technology, if you’re not moving forward, you’re moving backward. The world does not wait for us in sympathy, to just stop feeling sorry for ourselves, or sort out our excuses. Every day we procrastinate increases the gap, and tomorrow we’ll have to run faster in order to catch up.

How many times in your life have you thought “How on Earth am I going to do this”? The answer is in the question. You need to do something.

I remember thinking this many times, when I felt small and overwhelmed. I’m only 1.5m tall, so it’s very easy for me to feel small… So I look at the situation and say to myself “OK, this is what I have, and this is what I’ll win with”. During my final Math exams, when I spent too much time looking at a problem, not knowing exactly how to tackle it, my teacher always said “Copy the question onto the answer sheet. If you still don’t get the answer, at least you’ll get some credit for restating the facts”. Most of the times, copying the question made the difference for me, and when it didn’t, I got some credit for writing it down. Life is just the same - when we can’t find the solution, acknowledging the facts gets us part of the way to our goal.

Sometimes, when I play Solitaire, I look at all the cards on the table, and I can’t find a way to win the game. I check once, twice and even three times, but get stuck in my mind. So then I move one card, just one card, and everything starts to happen.

Many people have asked us over the years “How do you manage the logistic operation of moving countries, with your children and all your stuff?” Well, we followed 4 rules:

1. Know where you’re going
2. Believe you can get there “one step at a time”
3. Acknowledge the facts - recognize what you have to work with
4. Roll up your sleeves and get moving - do the one things that can be done right now

With these rules engraved in our philosophy of life, it is much easier to start moving to another country, continent or even into a better place inside ourselves.

Please pass this article to anyone you would like to offer the honor of sharing the road with you and Until next time have a safe and joyful journey.

Be happy in life!

Three powerful success keys of getting what you want

Wednesday 14 November 2007 @ 10:11 pm

by Basavaraj Udapudi
Focus is one of the keys to success in life. To focus means to concentrate on a particular thing. Getting what you want from life requires several things. Of those requirements, probably the most important is FOCUS. Accepting the odds you are up against and doing whatever you have to in order to keep your goals in your sight demands that focus. Concentrating on the goal through all obstacles is the foundation of focus.

1.Burning Desire-wanting something so much, that everything you do works towards that goal. Having a continuing, burning desire to achieve your goal is the most important factor. To recognize that desire as burning or not, you must know the difference between a wish and a desire. “Wishing” is something you do when you would like to have something or achieve something but just don’t seem to make time to get it done. Or something that you attempt to achieve, but burn out quickly is a clue. As soon as the whim passes, you don’t think of it anymore. A “desire” is something that no matter how much time goes by, you continue to think about it. You go through the thought process of making plans. If it is “true desire”, you will have a hunger to go to the ends of the earth to make it happen. “Intense” desire is the first requirement for achieving anything worthwhile. The person with intense desire for his goals spends enormous amounts of time planning how he can achieve it. He then works with the same fevered, dedicated attitude to get it done. His persistence and perseverance pay off, with his dream coming to life.

2. Always keeping your eye on the prize-Focus-Focus-Focus, is the ongoing inspiration to reach your goals. Maintaining focus on what you are trying to achieve, is done by talking to yourself. This is done by using affirmations. You tell yourself positive things to boost your moral and keep your mind headed in the right direction. It isn’t necessary to do this all day. The following combination of exercises will create the same effect as physical exercise. Repeated over and over, you will gain strength and endurance for the long haul.

a) Doing affirmations before you start your day and again when you are ending your day is an easy routine that creates great results. If you have problems during the day that put you on a negative level, do more affirmations. Problems that come up can be put to rest quickly if you use this method to keep your attitude in check. Using this tool during critical periods of doubt can help get you through. Each time you do affirmations, you re-focus your mind to boost your moral and keep you going positively.

b) Creating your reality-This means realizing that everything you think, believe or feel, plays a major part in following through with anything you are. Think it, believe it, go for it, achieve it. The universal principles of life, such as the ones described in the e-book (Success Wisdom) will ALWAYS work, if you just follow through.

c) Monitor Your Emotions-In order to send out the positive vibrations that is an integral part of success, your emotions have to be in check. Feelings that are negative shine above the positive. Negative vibrations are created that send out the wrong message. Attracting the right kind people to help you complete your goal is impossible if the vibrations you are sending are negative. The Astral Color Alchemy Process, (as described in Success-Wisdom e-book) is an effective method to use to eliminate the negative thinking. Thinking of your goals, repeating your affirmations, or remembering a pleasant memory from the past that made you feel really good works for many. You may have to think of some event that was enjoyable or something that made you grateful. Creating positive feelings and emotions about your journey to your “burning desire” will make your trip easier. Put yourself back in sync with your goals in order to continue to gain ground on a positive, progressive level.

3. Drive is the power to continue to move forward from wishing to reaching the object of your desire. Your subconscious has the power to endure the rigors of getting what you want. You help create that power. Nothing in life happens without action. Wishing by itself won’t make it happen. It takes following through and keeping the finish line in sight for success to happen.

Craig Meets Lance Armstrong

Wednesday 14 November 2007 @ 3:11 pm

by Craig Harper
Last Saturday six hundred of my closest friends and I got together for a chat at the Network Convention (Annual Fitness Industry Shindig) here in sunny (drought-stricken) Melbourne.
Well I spoke, they listened.
Being the insecure only-child with a constant need for attention, that worked well.

“I’ll stand up here and you all look at me for ninety minutes… okay?”

Perfect.
We had a great time, lots of fun.

Seriously, the people from Network (Nigel and Lisa Champion) put on an amazing two days of education and inspiration for two thousand (or so) of Australia’s information-hungry fitness professionals.
Well done team.

While I really enjoyed presenting and no-one threw stuff at me (always a good sign), it was the trip into the city on my scooter which provided the comic relief and inspiration for my morning.

So there I was at seven thirty in the am, perched at an intersection waiting to turn onto Beach Road (the main road running along the Beach and into the city here in Melbourne) to head into the conference. I was sitting at the lights lost in my own thoughts when all of a sudden I became aware of a presence… no, not a poltergeist; a bloke on a mountain bike had pulled up along side me.
Three feet away.
Coulda touched him.

Game face on… waiting for the green signal.
Like an Olympian waiting for the starters gun.
Focused.
Committed.
And dressed atrociously.
Didn’t matter… it’s all about function.
I actually laughed in my helmet, he looked so funny.
(No, he didn’t hear me).

Here’s the picture:
Chubby guy, maybe thirty five years old and twenty kilos (44lbs) overweight.
Ten year-old bike (at least) accessorised with one of those white and yellow foam helmets from the eighties strapped too tightly around his unshaven cheeks.
Kind of like a chubby Adam Sandler.

Some twenty five year-old sneakers providing a home to two lovely brown business socks!
A sweat-stained grey training-shirt, not quite covering the totality of his ample tummy.
Some too-small black track pants revealing some pretty significant (and hairy) calves and just a hint of ass-crack.
Nice.
Classy.

All in all, quite the picture.
So glad I hadn’t eaten.

I looked over at him.
He looked back.
I gave the obligatory head nod.
As us hard-core(!) scooter riders do.
He looked back, smiled and opened his mouth to speak.

‘He’s up for a chat’, I thought.

I lifted up the visor on my helmet.

“G’day Mate”.
“G’day.”
“How’s the scooter go?”
“Yeh, pretty well.”
“That’s what I need; a motor.”
“You’re doing okay.”
“I’m givin’ it a crack anyway..”
“In training for something?”
“Yep, gettin’ married in six weeks.”
“How’s the progress?”
“Great, lost six kilos (13lbs) in three weeks so far.”
“Good for you man, that’s awesome.”

He certainly was ‘giving it a crack’ and he turned out to be a really nice guy.

Just then the lights turned green and a large group of cyclists (all on their five thousand dollar road bikes and clad in the obligatory lycra) sped through the Beach Road intersection heading into the city also. Lance Armstrong (my new friend) and I pulled away from the lights and the funniest thing ever happened… Lance decided that he would attach himself to the back of the peloton (bunch of cyclists) and ride with them!!

This was amusing for all kinds of reasons… but here are my top five.

1. He was outa shape and relatively unfit - they were all serious, fit riders.
2. His bike was worth fifteen bucks (max), weighed fifty pounds, had knobbies (off-road tyres) and a bell.
3. They were all ‘in uniform’ and he looked like he’d just escaped from a shelter.
4. His helmet made him look like he was about to be shot out of a cannon.
5. He wasn’t one bit worried about what anyone thought - I loved that about him.

So we were off…
Lance and I followed the pretty boys on their over-priced ‘Giants’ and ‘Cannondales’ down Beach Road.
His legs pumped like angry little pistons and I laughed so much that my helmet started to fog up.
Within one minute he had caught the group and I thought he was about to expire.
I tried to recall my first-aid… “is it five compressions per breath… or four?”
He looked in pain.

“C’mon Big Fella”, I yelled through my helmet.

His work rate increased.
He was lovin’ the love.
I decided not to overtake the group (not hard to do considering I was the only one with a motor) and to coach my boy to the next set of lights.
Such fun.
Lance and I sat at the back of the pack, I offered more encouragement and his rapidly fatiguing pistons continued to pump.

About two km’s (just over a mile) into the journey he turns and yells to me “how fast am I going?”
How funny is that?
I laughed my guts out.
Again.
Only an Aussie bloke who’s near death would still care about… ‘how fast he’s riding’.
If he was a she… not a chance.

I looked at my speedo.
“About forty (25mph).”
“I’m flying.”
(more laughs)
“Yes, you are..”

And with those words.. the big man started to ‘hit the wall’.
His legs began to turn to rubber, his pink cheeks started to turn a lovely shade of grey and the friendly dialogue came to a standstill.

Lance began to drop off the back of the pack.

“C’mon Champ… don’t let those pretty boys get away.”
He mustered one final heroic burst, kind of like Sly in the first Rocky movie (the only good one) and momentarily caught the group again… he hung on for a bit and then surrendered to his screaming body.

He was exhausted but triumphant.
Strangely, I understood his triumph.
To anyone else, me and my chubby athlete would have been a bizarre sight, but to us it was a significant moment.

The ex-fat kid was delighted to invest five minutes into the friendly chubby guy ‘training’ for his wedding day.

We pulled up at the next set of lights and Lance was breathing like an eighty year-old smoker with emphysema.
But he was happy.

“Thanks Man.”
“You’re welcome… keep up the great work and have fun on the big day.”
“I will…”

We exchanged a few more pleasantries, the lights turned green, we gave the alpha-male nod and I left the exhausted, but happy, groom-to-be to finish his training session.

I rode away with a big smile on my face.
He was happy, I was happy… and the ‘real’ cyclists thought we needed help.

As I continued my journey into the conference, I thought about what Lance had taught me:

1) It’s really easy to connect with people when we want to - especially when we make it about them.
2) Everyone responds to encouragement.
3) Most people like some attention and care.
4) It’s amazing what a little support (even from a stranger) can do to a person’s level of performance.
5) When we slow down and notice what (and who) is around us, there are lessons to be learned.
6) Helping a stranger can make me feel better than helping myself.

Thanks Lance.
Enjoy your wedding day and your life with Mrs Lance.
