Developing your whole-brain thinking through mindmapping technique

Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 4:09 pm

by Mindmapper
The term ‘ambidexterity’ is basically being adept in the use of both right and left hand. Michelangelo, Leonardo Vinci, Einstein, Fleming, Harry Truman, etc., were all ambidextrous. In modern times, you will find many, who were originally left-handed but in the course of their childhood, were drilled to acquire right-handed habits (at school or home) and thus became ambidextrous.

Using the same analogy, we could say we are being ambidextrous when we are multi-tasking — talking over the phone, writing down information, watching TV and so on. The difference is that instead of our hands, we are using both our right and left hemispheres to successfully juggle our tasks. You may have heard some people referred as ‘right-brained’ or ‘left-brained’. In essence it means that the person displays more ‘right’ or ‘left’ oriented skills, although we are all the time integrating both hemispheres in our daily activities.

‘Right’ brain qualities involve imagination, risk taking, artistic abilities, highly philosophical, creative, etc. ‘Left’ brain people, on the other hand, are practical, conformist, seek order, have good comprehension skills, etc. Thus ‘right-brain’ people are said to think subjectively, holistically and have strong intuition, while ‘left-brain’ people tend to be more logical, analytical and highly rational.

We find some people are more adept at certain kind of thought patterns than others. Notwithstanding the fact that we inherit certain mental traits and capacities, it is how we use our mind that determines our mental prowess. As children we are innately right-brained, revealing great creativity, imagination, spontaneity, open-mindedness and enthusiasm but ironically, as we grow, social, cultural and racial influences constrain these natural traits.

Ambidextrous mind or whole brain thinking optimizes our brainpower and injects a heightened level of awareness. To nurture an ambidextrous mindset, we can work on right-brain learning activities by including patterning, metaphors, analogies, role-playing, visuals, and movement into reading, calculation, and analytical activities. Concentrated effort to involve in left and right brain activities, human consciousness studies, reflective thinking and meditation are excellent means to develop ambidexterity of the mind.

One easy technique that helps in such whole-brain thinking process is Mind Mapping. It helps the mind in diffusion of thought and paves way for streaming line of thoughts and associations. Association essentially is finding the links in logic and ideas, and when these are explored in full, it leads to insight, imagination and creativity.

Colors, pictures, symbols, etc., are valuable aids that strengthen vividness, clarity of perception and easy dissemination. Mindmapping technique employs all these subtle aspects of the brain, thus lending it power and dynamism. When mindmap technique is used for learning, it undoubtedly becomes a highly effective and powerful way of gaining knowledge. It is the best means for developing an ambidextrous or whole brain thinking ability.

What stops you from advancing in Life?

Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 4:09 pm

by Hari Qumar
Everyone wants to advance further in life and ultimately reach their goal. You would certainly not like to be left behind in the race. Do you tend to get lazy in the process? Why is it so? There are some factors involved in this.

Let us discuss each of the factors for being lazy or inactive and how you can avoid the Inertia:

1. Self-Introspection

2. Fear

3. Desirous of results without putting in equal effort (Lack of willpower)

4. Immediate Environment

Self-Introspection: First and foremost you need to do self-introspection that is doing your own SWOT analysis. What does one mean by self-introspection and SWOT analysis? This literally means that you take stock of your traits and habits. And also try to find out your own strengths, weaknesses, opportunities that you can work on and what are the threats that you encountered in the path

Often, lack of self-introspection is the cause of our short fall, and it is the lack of definite, undivided effort and attention that stands in our way to progress and achievement of the desired goal.

Introspection therefore means reassessing ourselves. The reassessment tells us where we are right now and what threats are we facing to reach to our desired goal and what opportunities do we have in hand to work on. Self-introspection is the reassessment of our own mental ‘block’ (created by our ownselves) and diagnosing deficiencies by removing negative tendencies in the form of habits, indecisiveness, fear, lack of confidence and so on — what we often term as failures.

What do we do here to ward of failure? We need to reenergize so that by uprooting all these negativities from our life the true happiness with the zeal to progress becomes prominent and firmly rooted.

Fear: The greatest enemy that stops us from advancing in life other than apathy, lack of confidence and inferiority complex is FEAR. It is the fear of the unknown. What if we do not achieve our goal? This unknown fear will literally stop us from moving forward — in fact we will not even fulfill our very aim to succeed. The best way to combat fear is to practice deep breathing exercises, and every night mentally affirm that you are under the protection of the Supreme Power of God, and energize your thoughts with positive feelings.

“Stay positive, Put your best foot forward, and always look at the rosy side of the picture, irrespective of the outcome.”

The key to ward of the fear is ‘Be Courageous and Bold’. Where does this fear emerge from? Fear comes from the heart, so fill your heart with LOVE, positive thoughts and when you feel agitated relax, calm down and breathe rhythmically, relaxing with each exhalation. This will help you in warding of fear in order to achieve your goal with full concentration.

”It often requires more courage to dare to do right than to fear to do wrong.”

Lack of willpower or determination: This is yet another factor, which is the major cause of frustration and subsequently dampening our ability to excel in life. It is, ‘desirous of results without the will to put in the effort’. Everyone wants to have quick and easy results without working hard for it. This is practically not possible. Because to gain something, you need to work hard, sweat out only then will you be able to reap the fruits of your hard labour.

‘Nothing comes free in life’.

You have the willpower within you to accomplish your goal, your end result. Don’t get bogged down by failure, sorrow, lack of confidence. You need to have a positive bent of mind, be optimistic, have determination and be consistent towards achieving your goal in life.

Remember, don’t be lethargic rather put in your effort to achieve your desired goal in life.

Immediate Environment: This is yet another factor you will ever meet in your life. It is your immediate environment. This immediate environment can be classified in to two:

Inner and the Outer. It is these two fields of environment that you will have to watch out for.

You can always keep control of your inner environment more than your outer environment. All your experiences come from your mind stuff — or the inner environment (your thoughts). What you perceive through all your senses from the outside world will equally shape your future. That is, if you perceive things around you to be positive, they will be positive. They will send positive vibes or thoughts within you thereby increasing your confidence in order to achieve your goal.

But on the other hand, if you perceive things around you to be negative, they will be negative. They will send negative vibes or thoughts within you thereby decreasing your confidence, lack of concentration in order to achieve your goal. You thus go towards failure.

Thus the important point here is to keep watch over your thoughts. For example, you may have stumbled upon a great home business opportunity that is potentially superb and just right for you in every aspect.

If you are having positive thoughts within you then you are happy, and quite willing to give it a go. But, on the other hand, there is something about this business that ‘stops’ you from going ahead with it. There may be several reasons for this that may make you lazy enough to achieve your goal.

What could be that negative factor? If you think about this, then you are doing self-introspection, you will no doubt come to a favorable conclusion…and surprisingly it is, the thoughts — the culprit.

To succeed in life you will have to begin by correcting your thought process. As rightly said, ‘Your thoughts reflect on your body language’.

So, in order to advance in life, you need to avoid the factors to inertia.

Managing Time effectively with mindmapping

Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 3:09 pm

by Mindmapper
Time management is a subject on which there are great many books ad infinitum. Yet, many people struggle to keep time and maintain balance within their personal, business and social needs and responsibilities. This invariably leads to stress, fatigue and anxiety in a great many people, apart from resulting in failure to achieve their goals or objectives.

For effective time management the need is to focus on those core areas for achieving the desired results. As a rule, we exhaust a great deal of our time on miscellaneous issues spending 80% of our time for gaining 20% results, and assigning just 20% of our time for completing the remaining 80% of the work. This undoubtedly brings in its wake all the stress syndromes.

The first step for improving efficiency is knowing the most important and the unimportant activities and devoting your time and attention accordingly. You can allow greater time on the vital issues and effectively delegate or outsource those of less importance or consequence. You can also have an activity logbook to keep time on the different activities of the day, including talking over the phone, watching TV, etc. A scrutiny of your log book at the end of the day will reveal where you are spending time unrelated to its value and those areas where you need more time for achieving your main goals.

Indeed we have the inevitable ‘Action Plan’ and ‘To Do List’ that are enduring methods of time management. Action Plan focuses only on those primary steps needed for reaching your immediate goals by breaking them into simple tasks. ‘To Do List’ is a great resource for keeping note of the sundry tasks required every day or week

Apart from these familiar methods, you can use Mindmapping as a tool for managing time effortlessly. Be it Action Plan, or To Do List, or Activity Log book or even Goal setting, Mind Maps are ideal for managing your time and hastening the process to achieve your larger goals.

By giving a wide picture of your goals and tasks, Mind Maps keeps you motivated and stays you on course. Other time management methods serve more for scheduling time, but Mind Maps help you to go beyond the mundane and the immediate, as the larger goal remains in your perspective, urging you to plan and act. It motivates you toward greater application and action. Therein lies its efficacy and viability.

By bringing all your short, medium and long-term goals into a single Mind Map, you gain a comprehensive picture and are aware of the different streams of your activities. It lends meaning to your activities by highlighting the links between your different tasks and provides impetus to attain your goal and objectives. Mindmapping thus becomes a meaningful exercise that lends depth and action. It is an ideal tool for increasing your efficiency and offers flexibility on the choice of your action. It is indeed a simple and effective device for achieving your ambitions.

Learning to be ambidextrous through mindmapping

Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 3:09 pm

by Mindmapper
‘Ambidexterity’ is the facility of use of both right and left hand. Michelangelo, Leonardo Vinci, Einstein, Fleming, Harry Truman, and others displayed ambidexterity.

To extend the logic, we are being ambidextrous when we use both our right and left hemispheres to successfully juggle our task. We are ambidextrous when we are multi-tasking — doing more than one work at the same time. We have heard people being called ‘right-brained’ or ‘left-brained’ from the kind of attributes they exhibit. It means that the person displays more ‘right’ or ‘left’ oriented skills, although we are all the time integrating both hemispheres in all our daily activities.

Some of the ‘right’ brain qualities are imagination, risk taking, artistic abilities, philosophical outlook, creative nature, etc. ‘Left’ brain people, on the other hand, are practical, down-to-earth, conformists, disciplined, absorbent, etc. Thus ‘right-brain’ people are said to be subjective, think holistically and have strong intuition, while ‘left-brain’ people tend to be more logical, analytical and highly rational.

As children we are innately right-brained, displaying high creativity, imagination, curiosity, spontaneity, open-mindedness and enthusiasm but ironically, as we grow, social, cultural, education, racial and other influences constrain these natural traits. It is important to know that whatever mental traits and capacities we may inherit, ultimately it is how we use our mind that spells our mental capabilities. So we can work towards developing certain mental attributes and traits.

By using the two hemispheres, we will be working our brain to its full potential. Ambidexterity of the mind or whole brain thinking is maximizing our brainpower and developing our sensitivity and awareness level. Patterning, metaphors, analogies, role-playing, visuals, and other analytical activities help in developing right-brained attributes. We can build an ambidextrous mind by consciously engaging in left and right brain activities, reflective thinking and meditation.

However a much easier technique that helps in such whole-brain thinking process is Mind Mapping. This technique uses diffusion and streaming thoughts, associations, concise and essential words, color, pictures, symbols and other visual aids that kindle logic and ideas, and when explored in full, it leads to insight, imagination and creativity. Mindmapping stimulates thinking and a free flow of ideas. By constantly working on mindmapping, you will automatically be working as a whole-brain thinking person. It is an easy and powerful process as it is based on brain working principles. Just anybody can learn and profit from it.

Elephantine memory and mindmapping

Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 2:09 pm

by Mindmapper
An important feature of any learning is memory. Without it all learning is futile. Some have razor sharp memory, but others have average to poor memory. Memory can be improved vastly by using some of the memory techniques.

1. Any new learning can be grasped faster by associating the new information with any acquired learning. This helps to see the possible connection and lends greater meaning and significance to the information learnt.

2. Studies have revealed that memory improves by using both sides of the brain. This is whole-brain thinking. The attributes of the left side of the brain are logic, words, lists, numbers, sequences and analysis, and for the right side it is rhythm, imagination, daydreaming, color, size and spatial awareness. Working on using both these elements will strengthen memory.

3. The most common problem of memory is lack of proper attention. .

4. You can picture the information you want to remember in a sequence and the more bizarre, humorous and inflated the images, the greater the recall.

5. Main ideas or information can be strung into an unusual story. You can remember a long series of information by spinning a story out of it.

6. Acronym, which is taking a word out of each item to be recalled, is an effective method way for remembering information in an order by. E.g. My Very Elegant Mother Just Served Us Nine Peas — represent 9 planets of the sun - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

7. Using the first letter of each item that stands for a word in a phrase is Acrostic. Eg. Pink = Pink is a special color; I like it more for its subtle shade, Never loud or garish; Kind of gentle and pleasing always.

8. Chunking is an effective method often used in numbers. A 12-digit number can be split in 2 units of 6 each for easy recalling. E.g. number 982615947502 can be cut into two units of 982615 — 947502. You can also chunk items under different concepts such as - fruits, vegetables, animals, etc.

An equally powerful and easy technique for reinforcing learning and memory is Mind Mapping. Mindmapping technique is primarily based on how we think, remember and recall.

It induces whole-brain thinking by kindling a chain of associated thoughts and ideas. It draws your full and focused attention and adopts visual stimuli such as colors, pictures, symbols, dimensions, etc., creating vividness, and strengthening recalling abilities.

The Mind Map technique has the potential to trigger greater creativity, imagination and insight. You have to experience the technique to realize its true value.

Befriending Your Gentle Giant: A Lesson In Self Motivation

Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 2:09 pm

by Kenrick Cleveland
“It is as if evolution has built a safety device in our nervous system that allows us to experience full happiness only when we are living at 100% - when we are fully using the physical and mental equipment we have been given.” ~Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

At what capacity are you functioning? Are you physically, mentally, spiritually and persuasively at 100% of of your ability? The search for meaning and fulfillment is strong within us and sadly, some find these things out of their reach. Some people struggle with finances, relationships, psychological issues, a lack of motivation while others live their fulfilled lives with ease living up to their full potential.

I happen to believe that this is partially a result of a disconnect with our other-than-conscious selves. When we engage our other-than-conscious, phenomenal things can happen.

A really cool way to look at your other-than-conscious mind is regarding it as your gentle genie, or guardian angle. Its only function is to give you what you ask for.

It’s an additional power within us, capable of being harnessed. You’ve had it from the minute you were born. And from the minute you were born, it was learning. You’re simply observing what it is that you’re hearing.

This unconscious learning is being filtered into another part of you.

From the very start of our lives, we were conditioned–first as babies, learning language, learning how to interact with other humans. . . we received punishments or rewards. And as we learned, so did our other-than-conscious minds. These early learnings mapped out our futures and what we could expect out of life.

Of its many roles, the subconscious is a powerful persuader–self-persuader–and when you understand this, you are naturally able to engage its help.

The main function of the other-than-conscious is to keep us alive. Another is to keep us doing exactly what we’ve always been doing. This is, at times, problematic, especially when you’re trying to make big changes in your life.

It’s possible that your other-than-conscious has been sabotaged by negative conditioning. It runs on a ‘I can’t do that’ program. This part of the brain is responsible for turning something into a habit by helping you know something on ‘auto pilot’ instead of having to ‘remember’ it. This works both positively and negatively for us.

You’re going to experience an enormous difference in your life as we reframe the power of your other-than-conscious and engage it to aide us in exploring how far we can go.

How do we befriend our other-than-conscious? It sounds silly. It’s weird. . . Well, there goes that negative conditioning again. How about gaining rapport, as you would with any other friend, a simple act that takes very little time or effort. Have a little talk with yourself.

I thought this was silly at first too. I thought, ‘Why do I have to make friends with a part of myself?’ Take that leap of faith and you’re going to find a huge difference in your life.

And this is how to do it: Give yourself a little pep talk. Ask for what you need help with. ‘Dear Gentle Giant. . . I’d love to double our income. I think we’re absolutely worth it.’ Or maybe, ‘Hi. I know we’ve had some rocky relationships and there has been a bad pattern created and now, I’d like to end that and have a great connection. What do you think? Let’s do it together.’

You could also ask for help with things you’re learning, as in, ‘Gentle giant, I would absolutely love to have my persuasion skills increase exponentially. You are really the one I can count on for help.’

Everything that you are, everything that you do, and everything that you have began with your intention to have it in one way or another is controlled by your other-than-conscious mind. All you have to do is tap into your persuasive power and your persuasion skills will naturally develop.

Kenrick Cleveland teaches strategies to earn the business of affluent clients using persuasion. He runs public and private seminars and offers home study courses and coaching programs in persuasion strategies.

Looking For Job Hunting Tips

Friday 28 September 2007 @ 5:09 pm

by John Foley
Are you a fresh graduate and planning to look for a job? Did you just recently quit your job and are looking for greener pastures? Are you unemployed and have little experience regarding ways to secure a job? Whatever your situation may be, it would be to your advantage to study the following tips:

Check your resume for mistakes

Before submitting your resume to a prospective employer, check your resume for corrections at least three times before handing it over. After researching about the job position, it is critical that you format your resume to match the needs of the company. For example, if you are applying for an accounting job, you should put in detail your accounting experience on your resume. Typographical and grammatical errors are serious no-no’s. It is also ideal to keep the length of the resume’ to at least a page and a half long.

Taking the interview challenge

A survey conducted by a staffing and consulting firm based in California which corresponded with 1,400 chief financial officers concluded that candidates for employment made most of their mistakes on their interviews. Some of the mistakes they made include: arriving late, having little knowledge about the company and the position applied for, and having a superiority complex and behaving arrogantly. The body language of the applicant must also denote that he is confident yet not overpowering. He must maintain eye contact, have a strong handshake, and avoid looking defensive by the act of crossing the arms. Wearing the right clothes is crucial for projecting a confident stance. As they say, it is better to go to an interview over-dressed than being under-dressed.

Answer questions smartly

A common mistake of interviewees is that they tend to get tense and forget the questions that are given to them, which has the effect that they are not prepared for the interview. It is important to research about the company and the position applied for to prevent being side-tracked during the interview. If you do not know the answer to the questions being asked, it is better to admit you don’t know the answer to the question and add that you can research about it. Look for the skills or expertise that the company is looking for so that when interview day comes and the interviewer asks about your strengths and core competencies, you will be able to match it to what they need.

Getting the necessary referrals

Having a referral from one of the company employees can go a long way toward landing an interview. A typical company may receive job applications in the hundreds and usually 35% to 60% of all job vacancies are filled by referrals. The odds of getting hired when you have a referral are very high if you have another 200 to 500 applicants vying for the same position. If you do not know anyone from the company that may give you a referral, it is a good idea to the alumni network of your college, trade groups, social networks, and professional associations. Remember, having a referral greatly increases your chances of getting the position.

On online application

With the current trend of technology and its merging with business processes, more and more companies are now requiring prospective applicants to submit their application online. Thus, first impressions are relayed not by your first appearance but by the quality and content of your e-mail. E-mails regarding job application should be polished and well-articulated. When applying on-line, use the following tips:

Complete your sentences and do not abbreviate.

Employers do not like when you send them application letters that seem to be too casual. It is important to make a letter that is both formal and well written. This gives a good impression regarding your capabilities and skills.

Get directly to the point

When writing an application letter, you must be concise and straightforward. Do not put a story on the letter just to get the attention of the employer, chances are he or she will just get irritated with you and this only reduces your chances of getting hired.

Consider potential issues that may hinder you from getting the job

Although there are instances wherein there is a lot of need for a job but the requirements for the position may entail training programs that may bar you from getting the position due to its highly competitive nature. Some require a lot of experian even at least 3 years of work experience. Some may have no barriers to entry but the job itself may entail a very routine work flow.

Getting the job you want may be a challenge but never lose hope. It is better to wait a while and get the job that you will enjoy rather than get a job as soon as possible but ending up dissatisfied and unhappy. Make the right decision then act on it.

Banishing Fears: Move into Success, Health and Happiness

Friday 28 September 2007 @ 4:09 pm

by Mary Lee Labay
Anxiety disorders have been diagnosed in 18 percent of the US adult population. And how many more of us live lives that are limited by fears of things that never happen? We spend a lifetime fearing or worrying about some eventuality that never arrives. And we frequently worry in wild disproportion to what might actually occur. The bottom line is that none of the fear — and the resulting anxiety, stress, distraction of it all — really does any good. It reduces our ability to be present in our lives, and leads to serious deterioration of our health and our immune system.

Are you living a life based on unwarranted fears? See if these statements sound like you:
o It’s better to leave things as they are. This situation is not great, but something different could easily be worse.
o If I don’t take care of this project myself, it just won’t go well. No one cares as much as I do about it.
o People can’t really know what’s right for themselves. I am safer following the rules of authority (parents, church, peer groups, etc.)
o Stability is built from “tried and true” and “staying on the straight and narrow.”
o Society would be chaotic if we didn’t act from a sense of duty and obligation.

Though these statements don’t sound all that abnormal, they do point to limiting beliefs about change, trust, control, guilt, and obligation (the five most prevalent fears). To begin the process of ridding yourself of these attitudes, try this four step process:

1) In what way does having this belief benefit my life?
2) In what way is having this belief a detriment to my life?
3) How would not having this belief benefit my life?
4) How would not having this belief be a detriment to my life?

Insights gained from this process can help uproot unwarranted fears. For example, through this process, some smokers have learned they were more interested in the occasional 10 minute break during work rather than an actual desire to have a cigarette. Taking a proactive approach by suggesting a fresh air break to the boss may prove a welcomed strategy for all involved.

Removing stress and fear from our lives improves our ability to think clearly, allows our immune system to operate properly, and leaves time and energy to move toward our optimal goals.

Why Do Most People Run Away From Success and Choose To Be First Class Failures ?

Friday 28 September 2007 @ 3:09 pm

by Kevin T. Smith
Nobody wants to be a failure. Everybody wants to be a successful.

The simple fact is that to work hard to become successful in life is the goal of everybody unless you are ready to throw in the towel and give up on your efforts and chances of becoming a success.

In this day and age there is a ton of material available with the focus on helping people reach their goals at something. This material includes counseling programs, articles and books that speak of different ways to achieve success.

However, the level of success is not relative to those who use it even if they study the same product and use the right steps. Needless to say not everyone who utilizes this material become successful.

Now you have to ask, what is required to become successful? Several experts in their respective fields whether it be counselors or psychologists have established certain advice guidelines regarding the best ways for one to achieve success but none of them can really assure success.

The most reasonable explanation of this is that most people have their own way of becoming successful. They only use the advice of the experts as a general guide.

But if they make use of the same material, advice or guidelines available to them to teach them success, there is one major factor that allows one to gain a higher level of success. That factor is extra effort. Those that gain more success are willing to work and strive harder.

Making this extra effort is the determining factor in gaining success. What is ironic is that is the part of the whole process that is often overlooked. Those that seem to make an effort toward obtaining success, only to find failure believe that their efforts where good enough. They are left with this conclusion in their own minds that it just wasn’t meant to be and success is far from their reach.

Success should not be out of reach of anyone because success knows no boundaries. It is not something for just the privileged few. From those who can afford to the those not so fortunate to begin with and a strong desire to obtain it, success is for any and everyone. Success is for anyone that is willing to exert that extra effort that is required.

All this really means is, that if you want to be successful in life, a little “extra” in anything you do to work toward your goal needs to be exercised. It could be, extra effort, extra motivation, extra time, extra studying, extra reading etc.

Most people fail, or at least fail at their attempt to gain more success because the actions they have taken are not quite good enough. They simply overlooked the fact that in order to achieve their goal they need to make that extra effort.
To fully comprehend the meaning of making that extra effort, you must understand this:

1. People who have found success and make that extra effort have a plan and direction in life. This explains when they feel they have not achieved their objective, they are willing to work a little harder.

2. Those who come close to success make the necessary effort, but the true winners receive ultimate success by making that extra effort above and beyond to ensure their dreams come to fruition.

3. Stubborn determination, motivation and drive are all prerequisites of success and the truly successful people possess these traits.

Attitude plays a huge part toward success. Making that extra effort is not hard. It just means that you are almost there but that little boost of “extra” is required as the final step to your goals.

Make your dreams a reality. Encourage yourself to make that extra effort to go for it with an attitude of unbending determination and motivation. Remember, you are almost there, just give a little extra effort. You will thank yourself in the long run.

You Are the Mayor of You

Friday 28 September 2007 @ 3:09 pm

by Eli Davidson
The moment you decide to take dominion over what happens to you internally (regardless of the gunk and funk that can go on during a day) you step into your rightful place as the Mayor of You-ville. The instant you take office, you step up to the podium of your self-esteem and personal power. Hey, when I say personal power, I’m not talking about strutting through your life like a bad reality TV show diva. I’m talking about simply claiming the capacity that is already yours.

Think about what it means to be the Mayor of You-ville. You are able to speak up and set clear, healthy boundaries. (Even at work. Even with your kids. Even with your in-laws.) You are able to keep your cool with that creep from accounting. You are able to ask for what you want because what the heck, you’re the Mayor. Take a moment and drink it in. Connect with what being in charge of you feels like inside your skin. Most people feel a sense of expansiveness or serenity. What about you?

Go ahead. Stand up and feel what it’s like to be Mayor. You might find yourself sashaying, or striding, or strolling. It seems that each Mayor has their own natural pace. And their own name. Folks have been the Captain of My Ship, the Goddess of My Temple, the Diva of Me, even the Magic Baker of My Town. What is yours? Sure, it may seem a little silly, but go for it. You are using parts of yourself that you may not have visited since you turned eight. Is there a tickle of happy in there? Let yourself find it.

Let’s face it. You are and have always been the Mayor of Youville anyway. You just may have abdicated—like the rest of us. The moment you take office as The Boss, things can begin to change. The moment you stop pretending that someone else has snatched the remote control of your life, that’s the moment your life transforms. How? You start choosing your attitudes and your actions.

Even when you love someone more than life itself, you can’t breathe their air or digest their food. We aren’t wired that way. No one but you can assimilate the tuna melt sandwich you had for lunch. So too, no one but you can choose your attitude. The moment you grasp that it’s you, only you, who can grant yourself authentic power, that’s when you wake up. You stop being an innocent bystander in your own life and start becoming the co-creator of your days.
