How Do I Avoid Drinking Too Much Alcohol?

If you are trying to prevent yourself from drinking too much alcohol at social gatherings or even in your daily life, there are certain things you should know about how to live a life that is balanced and alcohol-free. Here are a few ways that you can keep your alcohol intake under control.

One of the best things you can do to monitor your drinking is to plan your social life carefully. If you want to stay away from alcohol, try to make sure that you are not always in tempting settings where alcohol is served. If you usually go to lounges and parties where there is a bartender or cocktails, try going to the movies or pack a picnic instead. Not only will this give you and your friends something different to do when you go out, but you can be sure that you won’t have to deal with the pressure of drinking if you feel it may get out of control. In addition, the people that you are hanging out with won’t be drinking either, which takes the pressure off tremendously.

You should also make sure that you understand the connection between your drinking and your daily habits. If you normally drink when you are upset or stressed, pay attention to the things that make you upset and try to either eliminate them, or deal with them in a different way. For instance, if you are experiencing stress at work, and usually drink after work, try something else that relieves stress, such as taking a walk after dinner or listening to your favorite music. You can also take advantage of meditation to clear your head and calm yourself down. This may feel strange to you at first but after a while, you will become accustomed to using alternative methods to make yourself feel better. It is also best to substitute drinking with positive activities as soon as possible. Even if you feel that you are just a social drinker and only drink when you are out with friends, you should use things like physical activity, your favorite television show, or spending time with loved ones to replace your tendency to drink.

Asking your doctor for advice is also a great way to get help if you think that your drinking is getting out of control. Your physician can refer you to counselors and therapists that can help you control your drinking before it becomes a serious problem that can ruin relationships with family and friends and eventually destroy your life. It may be a good idea for you to visit an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting or two in your area, so that you can talk about your feelings in an environment where you won’t be judged. You will be pleasantly surprised by the insight you will find by listening to others who may have been in your shoes at one point. You will also be able to make an honest observation about whether or not you need to get more help.

No matter which methods you choose to get your drinking under control, it is important to be honest with yourself about how serious your problem is and to ask friends and loved ones for support while you’re making sure that alcohol does not take over your life.

Who Else Has Fallen Into This Common Life Trap?

Right now, you are about to discover the common life trap that most people fall into. You are going to realize why you have been distracted from your dreams and have stopped pursuing your destiny. Once you become aware of that trap, you will gain the power to RE-DREAM and to take massive action to fulfill your dreams.

As I was reading The Alchemist, a book by the fascinating storyteller Paulo Coelho, I came across a passage that truly inspired me and opened my eyes to a common life trap that most of us fall into. I told myself that this trap must be the ultimate drama of life.

Here is the passage that I read in The Alchemist:

“Everyone, when they are young, knows what their destiny is. At that point in their lives, everything is clear and everything is possible. They aren’t afraid to dream, and to yearn for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives. But, as time passes, a mysterious force begins to convince them that it will be impossible for them to realize their destiny.”

That is absolutely true.

Remember when you were young and used to daydream about your future? You had great hopes and aspirations, and you believed that the world was full of abundance and prosperity. You were motivated and had great trust in yourself and your ability to achieve your dreams.

And suddenly, as beautifully stated by Coelho, a mysterious force began to convince you that it would be impossible for you to realize your destiny.

Do the everyday hardships of life tend to distract you from your dreams? Do you spend most of your time just trying to survive and to fulfill your basic needs as you grow older and your responsibilities increase? Do you pay too much attention to what other people say and to their judgment of you? Do you stick to your comfort zone and settle for living a mediocre life?

That life trap can lead to any of the above behaviors, and more. It really is a mysterious force — but one that you can overcome.

The most important thing to understand is that greatness lies in your ability to bring your dreams back to life.

Your greatness begins when you re-discover your true purpose in life.

Your greatness begins when you realize what you love to do the most, what you do the best, and what contribution you make to the world.

Your greatness begins when you know who you truly are.

Your greatness begins when you resolve to express yourself and unleash your potential to the fullest.

Whatever mysterious force affected you in the past, enough is enough! Today is your day. Venture out of that cocoon of the merely ordinary and begin to explore the realm of the extraordinary.

Red Bull for the Soul

Today has been an absolute struggle. I’ve been getting pulled in may different directions all at once lately and I’m starting to lose steam. With my attention to details being sacrificed due to being spread thin, lately my work quality has been not as high as I like, and I can see things getting worse in the near future.

Right about now, I could use a Red Bull for my spirit. I’m not a poet or anything, but while I was feeling sorry for myself, I came up with a phrase that gave me the extra boost I needed to get my spirits up:

Only love can create something from nothing.

I know, it sounds pretty sappy. However, think about it. Think of something you do for yourself, or better yet, for a loved one (a significant other, your child, your mother, or a best friend). What if you found out that that person was in trouble? Serious trouble, and they need your help now? Would you say “No?” I thought so - you’d be there to support them in a heartbeat, filled with the focused determination that is needed to give them the help for whatever that serious trouble is.

Now, extend that love to beyond the immediate. If you’re the breadwinner for your family, think of why you feel compelled to show up to work on days you want to stay in bed. Think of the times you patiently listened to your loved one complain about their day. Also think about when that loved one treats you to dinner or buys you a present.

This “thing” is the also the source of community service projects like Habitat for Humanity and Big Brother. We see love creating something from nothing all the time, and when the soul gets tired, love can be the Red Bull for the soul.

PS: That “something” that love can create isn’t always good, though. When the love is misaligned, that something can be bad. Greed is misplaced love. Hatred, to me, is warped love (a love against the object in question). Love with the wrong ideas lead to misunderstanding.

It’s so difficult to go on when everything seems to fail, isn’t it? Are there times in your life when you really want to call it “quits” because you just can’t see any good results from all the hard work you’ve done?

Never ever think of giving up. Winners never quit and quitters never win. Take all negative words out of your mental dictionary and focus on the solutions with utmost conviction and patience. The battle is never lost until you’ve abandon your vision.

But what if you’re really exhausted physically, mentally, and most of all emotionally? Here are some sources of motivation to prompt you in reaching the peak of accomplishment.

1) The Overwhelming Feeling of Attaining your Desired End

How would you feel after accomplishing your mission? Of course you will feel ecstatic. You might be shedding tears of joy. Let this tremendous feeling sink in and encourage you to persist despite all odds.

When I was studying for the Board Exams, I used this technique to motivate me. I would envision the sweetness of folks calling me a CPA. It would command respect. People will look up to me as a higher level of authority. And I would have better chances of finding a good job. I absorbed all these great perceptions into my inner being in order to achieve my ultimate goal.

2) The Reward System

How would you feel if you’ve entered a contest, but there are no prizes for the winners? It’s not very encouraging, isn’t it?

The same principles apply to your vision. Reward yourself after accomplishing a goal. Set a particular incentive for every objective.

Let’s say if you’ve achieved a particular task, you’ll treat yourself to your favorite restaurant. When you’ve finished a bigger task, you’ll go on a vacation.

Got the idea?

Just set something gratifying to indulge in after completing a certain undertaking.

3) The Powerful Force of Humanity

If you want to succeed, surround yourself with the right kind of people who will support and encourage you all the way.

Be with people who have the same beliefs and aspirations as yours. Positive aura is generated by this fusion of collective energy from people of “like minds.”

On the contrary, being with people who oppose your ways of thinking may trigger a negative, yet very powerful, kind of motivation.

Has anyone ever said to you that “You’ll never get anywhere” or “You’re wasting your time with what you’re doing?”

Didn’t it made you furious and determined enough to prove to them how wrong they were? This is what I’m talking about.

When aggravated, you will do anything to make those who are against you swallow their words. But of course, your main focus should be on the accomplishment of your goal and not for the purpose of revenge. Never let your emotions toward others alter your main objective.

4) Take Care Of Your Health

Exercise regularly. Fill your brains with enough oxygen to allow you to do your daily tasks with more vigor and energy.

Take regular breaks if time allows. Having the will power to continue despite all hardships is extremely important, but you should still know your limits.

If you don’t take enough rest, you will not be able to think clearly and you will not be able to do your tasks properly. In the process, you will just get more frustrated.

Take sufficient sleep and recharge yourself after a hard day’s work. Never, ever ignore your health. I’ve learned my lesson when I sacrificed my health for the sake of success. I’ve worked very long hours everyday and just got minimal sleep. As a result, I became ill.

It’s not worth it. Success won’t matter if you don’t have good health to enjoy it.

Why It’s Worth Fighting Your Dragons And Start Public Speaking!

Everyone hears about being nervous when speaking, and when you overcome it, you become confident and very successful. What you don’t hear from successful speakers is about the journey itself. For example, when I started in the field of speaking, I was a corporate employee. As a project engineer, I had to develop concepts and designs to solve problems within the plant. I was good at this and yet my career progress was slow because I simply couldn’t speak well, and I needed to present my proposals to obtain funding. I would become nervous, tongue tied and confused.

So when I started my public speaking career I was so scared and terrified, that even the thought of being in front of a group of people, made me feel physically sick, and would make my heart race so much, I thought I was having a heart attack. Clearly, I didn’t want to go through my life like that so I did some training and got ready for my Maiden speech. With this speech I was competing for a prestigious Silver Cup and I was excited because I thought I was going to win it. I walked out onto the stage in front of 200 people and arrived at the podium. Suddenly my legs started to shake so much I thought I was going to fall down. So I grabbed the lectern, which also began to shake, and then, at that moment, the butterflies in my stomach turned into dive-bombers and I started to feel sick. While shaking the lectern so much, I watched with horror, as my notes slid onto the floor. In total confusion now, I decide to start my speech without picking up the notes. My voice quavered as I stated my name, and then my mind went completely blank. After what seemed an eternity, I grabbed my notes from the floor and fled the stage.

All I achieved that day was to let people know who I was and that I was one pathetic speaker. Needless to say, I didn’t get the prize or even a polite or sympathetic applause from the audience. It was such a horrifying experience that I had to make a decision to quit or do something about it. (I was unable to get into the witness protection program to lose my identity!)

Well I studied, practised and used everything that I write about in my book and then some 12 months later, I had to give a speech on behalf of my company. Now this was a seriously major important speech for the company and me. If I didn’t do a brilliant job, my career would finish, the company would suffer and I reckon I would have been out of a job. That would mean, a massive change in lifestyle for my family, changing schools, changing houses and even putting my food supply at risk. So as I walked to the Podium this time I could feel this huge pressure bearing down on me. And do you know? I was confident, created humour and had them laughing, created pathos so they could feel sad, lifted them with excitement, spoke a very clear message, had them in the palm of my hand and when I finished ,they stood up to applaud. Pretty good eh? Oh yes, I got promoted and realized that day, that being a great public speaker helps you make more money, no matter what your job is.

So what made the difference?

What transformed me from bumbling idiot to charismatic speaker? And could anybody do the same? Clearly, the answer is yes, if they went through all the stuff they I had. Why am I qualified to say this? Because it is based upon my learnings, my studies, my experiments, good and bad, and most importantly, on my real life, in the fire, under the hammer, experience. And then I even wrote my own book on how to overcome the Fear of Public Speaking!

As Chairman of the Public Speaking Group at the Australian Institute of Management I have coached and helped many people who at the beginning of the year , could not even say their name, and by the end of the year, had become articulate and confident speakers. Motivation is essentially that thing that essentially fuels the fire.
